AURORA

Climate change and the health challenges associated with it are a growing concern, particularly in the northern regions of Europe. Climate change poses significant threats to human health and well-being, affecting not only Europe’s boreal region but the whole of Europe. Recent extreme events, such as the wildfires in the boreal region in 2021 and similar events elsewhere in Europe, have highlighted the need for systematic action and revealed the disproportionate vulnerability of marginalised population groups.

The AURORA project (Demonstrating Transformative Solutions to Empower Climate Resilience Towards Improved Public Health Status in the EU Boreal Region) was launched to address this urgent need.

AURORA aims to demonstrate solutions that strengthen climate resilience and promote public health in a changing world. In Pori, the project addresses specific local challenges, particularly those related to flood risks along the Kokemäenjoki River.

The AURORA project aims to develop new tools that help communities better understand and respond to the challenges posed by climate change. Pori is one of the project’s demonstration cities and plays an important role in its implementation. The city actively participates in project activities and tests new solutions at the local level. Pori’s flood protection measures provide one concrete example of an area where these solutions can be applied.

AURORA brings together a strong consortium of 26 partners, providing expertise in key fields such as epidemiology, climate science and technology. The project’s solutions will be demonstrated in five demonstration cities – Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Tampere and Pori – and three replication cities – Klaipėda, Joniškis and Jūrmala.

Project duration: 1 September 2024 – 28 February 2028
