100H2 – Integrating Hydrogen into Satakunta s Energy System

Satakunta is Finland’s most important energy region, producing 40% of the country’s electricity. The region is also home to energy-intensive industries. Significant changes are taking place in the combined production of steam, electricity, and heat due to the phase-out of peat and the transition toward renewable energy-based production. Moving away from peat and other fossil energy sources challenges Satakunta’s energy system to undergo comprehensive renewal, and hydrogen technology offers an excellent opportunity to support this transition.
The production of hydrogen and P2X fuels is still competing with equivalent fossil fuel production, which currently remains more cost-effective. For this reason, hydrogen and P2X technologies and ecosystems must be developed to become more economically efficient. The objective of the project is to develop energy and industrial systems in Satakunta where hydrogen and P2X fuel production are integrated as part of a broader energy system. A key goal is also to promote the realization of hydrogen and P2X technology investments in Satakunta.
The project also aims to promote the transition to a low-carbon society and support the implementation of the Satakunta Hydrogen and Gas Economy Roadmap 2030: Satakunnan vety- ja kaasutaloussuunnitelman 2030 .
Implementation period: 1 January 2024 – 30 June 2026
